Turtle Mound Flutes makes a line of flutes from PVC. Although these look, play, and sound very much like a wooden Native American style flute, they lack the natural spirit that the Great Creator gives us in the wood or cane of a true Native American Flute. We make these flutes with the same respect and care that we put into our wooden flutes, but distinguish them from our wooden Native American style flutes by calling them Knock-About Flutes.
Our Knock-About Flutes (made from the branch of the rugged poly-vinyl tree) are ideal for the rough treatment of children, back-packing, or just carrying around in the back seat or trunk of your car (where extreme temperatures can crack or otherwise damage a quality wooden flute). Each Knock-About Flute is individually crafted from heavy-duty "schedule 80" PVC and carefully tuned to the indicated key. Each flute also has a walnut or cherry wooden mouthpiece to not only more closely resemble the playing of a wooden flute but also prevent you from having to put your lips directly onto the PVC. Each Knock-About Flute is made in the woodlands style (with the flue in the flute body) with a simple, low-profile cedar wooden fetish that is attached with deerskin laces (available in tan, black, or white). The 6 finger holes are slightly offset to make reaching the holes easier, especially in the lower keys.
These flutes are not only virtually indestructible, but we can offer them for a fraction of the price of their wooden cousins. One of our Knock-About Flutes may be the perfect "starter flute" for the budget-conscious first time flute buyer, but should not be considered a permanent substitute for a quality wooden flute. Below are the Knock-About Flutes we are currently making. Additional keys will be added over time. Please contact us if you would like a different key.
